This Sunday Sesh we are raising our glasses to one of the originals, the Tom Collins!
The true origins of the Tom Collins mix are unclear, which is fitting, given the drink was named after a made-up person! However many claim that Jerry Thomas aka 'The Father of Mixology' is behind the creation of this famous drink.
The Tom Collins Hoax of 1874, went as such: People in New York and elsewhere in the United States would start a conversation with "Have you seen Tom Collins?" after the listener predictably reacts by saying that they did not know a Tom Collins, you would then tell them that Tom Collins was bad-mouthing them and that he was "just around the corner" "in a local bar" aiming to prod at the persons pride and temper, they would often storm off looking for this made-up person. This gotcha prank went old-school viral and it is rumoured a smart bartender harnessed this joke by creating the drink named after this mysterious person, so when someone came to the bar asking for the fictional man, they unwittingly ordered themselves a drink!
